SOUNDS OF EBISU
Sound artist FUJI||||||||||TA embarked on a field recording journey outside the walls of LEMAIRE’s newly opened flagship in Ebisu, Tokyo.
Taking the pulse of the neighbourhood, FUJI|||||||||||TA introduces his distinctive approach: drawing on natural phenomena, uncovering and amplifying the inaudible of sounds and noises often overlooked in the everyday.
« When I do field recordings, there are two main approaches I take. One is to search for specific sounds, such as the poles of power lines, guardrails, and posts in the city. This approach involves digging out sounds that we typically can’t hear », explains FUJI|||||||||||TA
« The second pattern is when I try to record an entire environment. The idea is that if my body were to be embedded in this place for years, the soundscape would gradually seep into my body—this is the kind of experience I’m aiming for. »
An immersive experience where Tokyo’s serene district becomes a canvas for the artist’s auditory explorations.
« I feel a great sense of joy when I discover a sound I didn’t anticipate. In this case, what was interesting was that each power line pole had a strong sense of individuality. Even though they were similar pipes, each one produced a different sound », describes FUJI|||||||||||TA.
« I had never studied the sounds of urban power line poles before, so this was fascinating. It went beyond what I expected. »
